Extra sci-fi festival Verona: the cult classics of the upcoming 2025 festival!

Published: 25/01/2025

Get ready to dive into the classics of science fiction cinema! Extra sci-fi festival Verona announces the three cult stars of the 2025 festival, to be held from 13 to 29 March at the Cinema Nuovo di San Michele and other venues in the city. Legendary titles, which have rightfully entered the history of cinema and are imprinted on the imagination of many fans, will be screened in their full glory on the big screen (in original language with subtitles) and introduced by presentations by experts and film critics.

  1. Close Encounters of the Third Kind – Director’s Cut

Friday 14 March, 21:00
Cinema Nuovo San Michele

What a classic is this first film that we will watch together – both aliens and humans alike – on the big screen! Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) revolutionised the portrayal of extraterrestrials, not as enemies, but as benevolent beings eager to communicate with humanity. We will once again witness this magic, the wonder and amazement that only a darkened theatre can convey, admiring the Director’s Cut, according to Spielberg himself, the most successful version of the film. Before the screening, be sure not to miss the close encounter with the stars organised by the Circolo Astrofili  Veronesi ‘A. Cagnoli’ (Veronese Astronomy group ‘A. Cagnoli’), starting at 8 p.m. in the cinema courtyard.

  1. Back to the Future

Friday 21 March, 21:00

Back to the Future (1985) turns 40 and continues to be a cult favourite! No other film is so steeped in pop culture and quotations, capable of generating a short circuit that, as our own Doc Brown would say, ‘doesn’t annihilate worlds, rather, it generates them’. After four decades, Robert Zemeckis’ film is still a must-see for fans and occasionals alike.

Before the screening, an unmissable Masterclass on the universe of ‘Back to the Future’ will take place in the cinema with George Rohmer and Toshiro Gifuni (i400Calci – Cinema da combattimento).

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road

Friday 28 March, 21:00
Cinema Nuovo San Michele
Tickets: buy here

If one had to choose a film that represents awe and wonder on the big screen, Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) is certainly one of the most emblematic. George Miller’s masterpiece is a hyperkinetic, sweeping journey that captivated audiences with its fast pace, breathtaking action and unique take on the post-apocalyptic world. A 10th anniversary to celebrate together, with an unmissable screening!

The screening will be preceded by a Masterclass on the world of Mad Max: Fury Road by Dora Renna (researcher in English Language, Translation and Linguistics) and George Rohmer (i400Calci – Cinema da combattimento).

However Extra sci-fi festival Verona is so much more and thanks to the renewed partnership with the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, there are also six newly released independent films in competition, as well as many shorts, presentations and exclusive events…
